In this week’s interview, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Leigh-Ann Luckett, Co-founder & General Manager of Crushed Wines.

Four like-minded women, from different sides of the world but with the same love for wines with personality, joined together (over Zoom) with an idea in late 2020.

Each of them is deeply passionate about wines – and quite specifically what it is that makes some bottles really come alive. The kinds of wine with so much character that there’s no need for jargon or fancy wine words, they speak for themselves and, man, have they got stories to tell!

They’ve created a space to showcase wines that allowed people to see and experience these wines the same way the founders of Crushed Wines do. A space for these wines to take centre stage, that highlights each bottle’s unique story, where those stories become the most important thing people need to know about a bottle of wine.

Let’s start with the timeless 60 seconds ‘elevator pitch’, what’s yours?

We work with small-batch sustainable wine producers who are doing more good for the world than just making good wines.

At one point or another, it is inevitable that challenges will pop up in business. What’s your approach to overcoming challenges?

We’re so fortunate to have a wealth of resources, knowledge, and skills between the partners at Crushed. If there’s something that needs working on, we’ll table it together to find a solution that most importantly feels aligned with the pillars of our brand.

Sales and marketing are two very important, but different, functions within a business. What is your number one sales tip?

We’re quite intentionally a small, neighbourhood store that’s modelled around building connections with our community and the winemakers we represent. Take the time to tell that story, to share small things you find meaningful, and engage with anyone who walks through the door or connects online. It’s something our modern world could use a lot more of!

What is your favourite business tool or system?

Shopify makes running both our retail and e-commerce stores so easy! The platform is very intuitive and provides a robust yet affordable solution for a small business.

It is important to celebrate your achievements, particularly during the difficult times. How do you celebrate your achievements?

Usually over a special bottle of wine between the partners!

Being in business is like an education in itself, what are the three most important lessons you’ve learned in your business?

Lesson 1: Letting people see the human side of you is so valuable.

Lesson 2: Only work with suppliers, partners or clients that feel right – trust your intuition about that.

Lesson 3: Always operate from a place of generosity

What business-related book or podcast has inspired you the most?

I love Adam Grant’s WorkLife podcast because it approaches work from a more psychology-oriented standpoint. Fascinating stuff!

The purpose of such an interview is to promote your business. Please tell us, who is your dream client?

We are thrilled to have a few dream clients already! Folks who trust our taste & know we’ve put in the work to make sure we’re offering something special that justifies its price point; who get excited about both the big and the small, the cool and the geeky with us; and who share a bit of who they are with us in return. We have a truly special group of people we get to call clients.

If you want to get in touch with Leigh-Ann, please contact her through her website, Crushed Wines.

Thank you for taking the time to connect with us Leigh-Ann. We are delighted to showcase you on our site.
