In this week’s interview, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Kathelijn de Beer​, Founder and Florist of Sprouts & Sparkles.

Sprouts & Sparkles was initially born out of the lacking possibilities to buy affordable and qualitative flowers for Kathelijn here in Hong Kong. Moving from Amsterdam to Hong Kong made her realise that she really missed the happiness and home-feeling that you get from having fresh flowers around.

Let’s start with the timeless 60 seconds ‘elevator pitch’, what’s yours?

Sprouts & Sparkles florist is revolutionising the process and experience of having fresh flowers in Hong Kong. By shortening the supply chains and operating as an online florist it is possible to deliver our clients premium quality cut flowers within 3 days from the Netherlands to their doorstep in Hong Kong. Surprisingly fresh, surprisingly blooming designs and surprisingly fair priced.

To fit altering needs, Sprouts & Sparkles created two collections with weekly changing designs and offers: The Amsterdam Collection and The Best Blooms collection. Our signature bouquets are inspired by Amsterdam: unconventional, wildly and diverse. Our mono bunches include the best seasonal blooms. All our flowers from the Netherlands are available on subscription, as a single purchase or as a gift. We prefer to keep the packaging eco-friendly and simple to let our blooms do the talking, although we create an extra sparkling touch for gift flowers. Surprise yourself or someone else and share our love for sparkling flowers. Together we bloom!

At one point or another, it is inevitable that challenges will pop up in business. What’s your approach to overcoming challenges?

As a start-up we truly believe that the only certainty in life is change. So, we better integrate this in the way we operate business. By being agile and embracing challenges as chances to learn and develop. But relying on international logistics with super fresh goods can be pretty stressful. The client comes first and we work hard to keep surprising them positively with our flower delivery service. I get great support and encouragement from my local team and my family when things get tough.

Sales and marketing are two very important, but different, functions within a business. What is your number one sales tip?

Whatever you want to say, let your service or product do the talking. The floral designs and the quality of our flowers should speak for itself. Keeping clients happy and surprising them over and over again has created loyalty and word of mouth is my main point of sales. I have recently learned that building a strong brand and the way that the flowers are wrapped are important to make the next step in our growth. Growth will have my main focus in the period ahead.

What is your favourite business tool or system?

Business WhatsApp and PayMe are brilliantly supportive to my way of doing business. But the most valuable are the people that inspire you, connect you and refer to your business. Happy clients that share their love for sparkling blooms via Instagram or Facebook are the most powerful marketing tool you can wish for.

It is important to celebrate your achievements, particularly during the difficult times. How do you celebrate your achievements?

Our wins are generally when customers share the happiness that they experience by having fresh flowers around. This keeps us going and motivates us to surprise them over and over again with our unconventional flower arrangements. We feel like celebrating every time we get a fresh arrival of flowers from the Netherlands and it’s our pleasure to share this with our clients. But I must admit that celebrating the successes is something we can improve on even further!

Being in business is like an education in itself, what are the three most important lessons you’ve learned in your business?

Lesson 1: Consistency is key… you have to deliver on your promise and make the sparkles happen, no matter what or how. There’s a solution for everything.​

Lesson 2:  Manage expectations by clear and timely communication. This is something I have learned the hard way, but the most important lesson so far.

Lesson 3: Bloom together by building strong relationships with clients, partners and your team. I’m very proud of the way Sprouts & Sparkles is performing on this one, it’s in our DNA.

What business-related book or podcast has inspired you the most?

I love to listen to podcasts, especially when hiking the stunning trails of Hong Kong. My favourite podcast is lead by Lewis Howes – School of greatness. Howes is a great interviewer and gets real about failure, insecurities and what it actually takes to achieve success in business, relationships and life. My favorite episode is the one with Grant Cardone. He convinced me to overcome insecurities and showed me the importance of relationships in building a strong brand.

The purpose of such an interview is to promote your business. Please tell us, who is your dream client?
