In this week’s interview, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Janus Chan, Founder of Jan’s Aesthetics of Nature.

In 2018, Janus launched her bespoke skincare business under the brand name – Jan’s Aesthetics of Nature (“JAN”). She got interested in skincare products while studying for her Aromatherapy diploma. She noticed that essential oils not only provide users emotional satisfaction but also generated positive effects on their skin conditions. Janus did course work on aromatherapy and skincare products to learn the skill of infusing traditional aromatherapy remedies into natural skincare products. She also completed the required courses from Australia to become a certified skincare formulator.

We all know that people always accord very high importance to the beauty and skincare and spend enormous sums on skincare products and treatments. However, such products do not always have the same beneficial impact on all users. Janus, therefore, decided to set up this business to create personalized skin products to satisfy each user’s unique needs. It is her firm belief that every person’s skin is distinctive, and so should be the products for their use. Janus motto is “Your Skin Your Call” and the name “Jan’s Aesthetics of Nature” comes from her faith both in Nature’s potency and the nature of an individual’s skin.

Let’s start with the timeless 60 seconds ‘elevator pitch’, what’s yours?

At JAN, everything is about YOU, the customer. We start with a consultation to understand your concern and needs, as also the skin condition, habits, lifestyle, etc., before formulating the right product for you.

The key features of JAN’s products are:

  • Safety: we use only non-harmful ingredients and avoid using ingredients that are prone to sensitive skin /allergy issues.
  • Sustainability: We use natural ingredients and our products are pH suitable for the skin.
  • Effectiveness: We customize products to suit personal needs and reinforce their potency by infusing aromatherapy for additional benefits.
  • Transparency: We are candid and straightforward about all aspects of our products.

When our superior choice is available, why compromise on quality and service?

At one point or another, it is inevitable that challenges will pop up in business. What’s your approach to overcoming challenges?

Stay calm, take a deep breath, divide the challenges into small parts, detect the major issues and then deal with them one by one. Great if I can solve it myself. If not, doing research and talking to people with expertise in different domains likely will lead to solutions.

Sales and marketing are two very important, but different, functions within a business. What is your number one sales tip?

Product quality and complete honesty with the clients. And, the word of mouth will follow.

What is your favourite business tool or system?

MS Office!

It is important to celebrate your achievements, particularly during the difficult times. How do you celebrate your achievements?

A day off, a spa treatment, and celebration with family and friends.

Being in business is like an education in itself, what are the three most important lessons you’ve learned in your business?

Lesson 1: If you never try, you will never know.

Lesson 2: Failure is both a lesson and stepping stone to success.

Lesson 3: There is no shame in seeking help; this sounds simple but often is difficult to follow.

What business-related book or podcast has inspired you the most?

I do not have any, but I do remember a former manager’s advice: “It is always worthwhile if you can at least achieve one thing for whatever you do” – it is now one of my inscribed mottos.

The purpose of such an interview is to promote your business. Please tell us, who is your dream client?

My ideal clients would be women or men, in the 30-50 years age range, who are curious about, and willing to use, the right skin product made from the nature, while also interested in protecting the environment by using minimal chemicals and avoiding additional wastage.
