In this week’s interview, we have the pleasure of introducing you to Catherine Marie Perera, Founder of Queen of Pentacles.

Catherine has several businesses. For Astridify, she wanted to find a way to showcase Southeast Asian artisans’ work. There are so many talented artisans that make trendy yet timeless clothing and style pieces that wanted people to adorn and appreciate.

For Queen of Pentacles, she’s always been reading tarot to her friends and took a leap of faith and finally decided to do it on a larger scale. It was during her eyelash appointment when she’s forced to shut her eyes. She’s thought a lot during those appointments!

Let’s start with the timeless 60 seconds ‘elevator pitch’, what’s yours?

Hi, Astridify aims to bring high-quality and sustainable lifestyle products into your life. At the same time, you get to help indigenous communities sustain their cultures.

For Queen of Pentacles, I just let the reviews speak for themselves. I rarely pitch it as it’s not a very good look.

At one point or another, it is inevitable that challenges will pop up in business. What’s your approach to overcoming challenges?

With Queen of Pentacles, people tend to have a negative view towards tarot reading or mock it. It was very challenging at first, especially when I’ve put in the hours to make sure what I put out is the best I can do. Luckily, after a few months and lots of returning clients, its reputation went up and even wellness, in general, is now starting to become a trend in Hong Kong.

Sales and marketing are two very important, but different, functions within a business. What is your number one sales tip?

It’s always attention to details. When customers see the packaging and all the little things that come with the products, they get a sense of understanding of who you are as a brand and that always helps secure returning customers or clients.

What is your favourite business tool or system?

Instagram ads are honestly amazing. They helped bring traction to my sites. Pop-ups are happening frequently as well and are good for brand awareness.

It is important to celebrate your achievements, particularly during the difficult times. How do you celebrate your achievements?

I celebrate every milestone, whether that’s reaching 200 or 500 followers. I do that through giveaways or group readings, events that my audience can participate in.

Being in business is like an education in itself, what are the three most important lessons you’ve learned in your business?

I’m still constantly learning and transforming every single day.

The first would be that business is always up and down, just like life as its own entity. Don’t be discouraged by the downs as it just goes up from there. Whether that’s a slow week, a month. When business is slow, it’s the best learning opportunity as you tend to brainstorm the most about ideas to boost your business.

The second thing is that you need to grow with your audience. Your audience is constantly changing and you need to evolve with them.

Lastly, networking is such an important tool and they don’t translate to numbers immediately but through your network, you can get opportunities such as pop-ups or events that can really bring more awareness to your brands.

What business-related book or podcast has inspired you the most?

I would say How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Especially during this day and age of influencers and influencer marketing, the power of influencing people is on the high. And it’s insane to think that the book came out in the 1930s, yet a lot of its lessons can still be applied today. It was definitely ahead of its time.

The purpose of such an interview is to promote your business. Please tell us, who is your dream client?

There is no specific “dream client”. Every client that comes my way is a dream and I’m grateful for every single one.
